Murray Hill Station in Queens, NY, Saturday, September 24, 2022 — Korea Art Forum (KAF) is pleased to announce the Fall iteration of Shared Dialogue, Shared Space: “Against Anti-Asian Sentiments.”
SDSS, organized by KAF, is a series of one-day interactive art initiatives presented for free in NYC Parks and Public Places. Since 2020, SDSS programs have connected immigrant communities and underserved ethnic enclaves in New York City to visual arts and culture through language access and participatory art activities. KAF has offered artist-run workshops and activities to populations with limited English proficiency with translation services in English, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish at local parks embedded in the community.
SDSS presents participatory art projects led by Ana Paula Cordeiro, Yeon Jin Kim, Yunjeong Lee, Rejin Leys, and Minshik Shin, including “Itajime” (Japanese dyed folk paper), collective painting, The Pulp Mobile (a paper making studio), “Jogakbo” (a Korean style of collective quilt-making) and Arpilleras (Chilean narrative fabric collages), and photography. To participate in the workshops and activities, please sign up for the workshop here: https://forms.gle/mwY5agH9FWqHHUe97.
Shared Dialogue, Shared Space at Murray Hill Station aims to broaden channels of communication between the contemporary art world and immigrant communities in New York City, advancing the artists’ creative endeavors of engaging the public. Focused on the expansion of public access to the artists’ creative work, the project fosters dialogues between the audience and artists, exploring a wide range of subject matters and the multidimensional role of art in the processes of cultural production and social change, focusing on combating Anti-Asian sentiments.
The contents of the full FY23 SDSS program, which incorporate in-person events at local parks and public spaces in Flushing, Queens; Mott Haven, the South Bronx; and Inwood and the Koreatown, Manhattan, will be made available on post-event videos accessible through the Korea Art Forum’s Facebook page and YouTube page at later date.
